AI Recommendation Coverage Leaderboard

AI bakery brand leaderboard

  • Dave’s Killer Bread and Pepperidge Farm are separated by 20 recommendations. 551 against 531, or 4.5% and 4.3% of the shelf — effectively a tie at the top.
  • Dave’s Killer Bread converts that tie into first place four times as often. 137 #1 answers against Pepperidge Farm’s 35, off almost identical mention counts.
  • Six of the top 14 brands are retailer private labels. Trader Joe’s, Great Value, Kirkland Signature, Favorite Day, Marketside and Kroger total 1,306 recommendations, more than the two national leaders combined.
  • Great Value ranks 6th on mentions but 3rd on first place. 100 #1 answers from 307 recommendations is the highest strike rate in the top 15.

Which brands hold up across all AI surfaces?

AI bakery brand consistency by assistant

  • Nature’s Own is the steadiest brand on the shelf. 3.3%, 3.4%, 3.3% and 2.8% across the four assistants — visibility that barely moves whichever one a shopper asks.
  • Favorite Day is the most lopsided: 2.9% on ChatGPT against 0.4% on Claude, a 7x gap. Target’s own bakery line is a ChatGPT phenomenon and close to invisible elsewhere.
  • Kroger’s private label swings 6x the other way. 2.5% on Perplexity against 0.4% on Gemini, the mirror image of Favorite Day.
  • Dave’s Killer Bread leads three assistants and falls to fourth on Perplexity. 5.4% on ChatGPT against 2.8% on Perplexity, its one weak surface.

*Each cell is the brand's share of that assistant's total recommendations. Only the top 15 brands are shown, so a column sums to roughly a third rather than 100%.

Recommendations, redrawn by parent company

AI bakery recommendations by parent company

  • Two bakers take a fifth of the shelf. Bimbo Bakeries at 1,435 and Flowers Foods at 1,256 account for 22% of every recommendation on this page, far ahead of the field.
  • Retailers are the third force. Walmart, Kroger and Whole Foods private labels total 1,001 recommendations, enough for third place if they were counted as one owner.
  • Better-for-you specialists reach the top ten on one demand alone. Food For Life Baking at 437 and Royo Bread at 264 are built almost entirely on sprouted, gluten-free and low-carb prompts.

*Covers the 8,956 of 12,229 recommendations attributable to a parent company. Brands with no known parent are excluded from this view.

Sources the assistants get their evidence from

AI bakery citation sources by assistant

  • Gemini cites nothing you can act on. 2,894 of its 2,910 citations route through grounding redirects, so its sourcing cannot be audited or influenced through the usual channels.
  • ChatGPT reads Target, Claude reads Walmart. target.com accounts for 1,131 of ChatGPT’s citations against 567 for walmart.com; on Claude the order reverses, 767 to 129. One content strategy does not reach both.
  • Retail product pages dominate the evidence. Walmart, Target, Kroger, Amazon, Instacart, Whole Foods, H-E-B, Aldi, Sam’s Club and Trader Joe’s together account for 5,290 citations, more than every editorial publisher on the list combined.
  • No brand-owned domain appears at all. The most-cited non-retail sources are tastingtable.com at 125 and goldbelly.com at 111. Assistants are citing where to buy bread, not what bakers say about it.

*Counts are citations rather than product recommendations. All interactive charts are best viewed on desktop or tablet.

What this means for your brand

This report is built from 400 real shopping prompts run across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Every brand each assistant recommended was captured using DataWeave’s platform, along with the position it held in the answer and the sources cited. Recommendations are rank-weighted so first place counts for more than eighth, and brands are normalized and mapped to parent companies where ownership is known.

Run against your own portfolio, the same method answers three questions most brands cannot currently answer: where you rank in AI answers and against whom, which assistants you are losing on, and whether the fix sits in your retailer product pages or in third-party editorial.

This report analyzes the Bakery category. DataWeave measures the same thing across any category and market, continuously rather than as a snapshot. Talk to us to find out where your brands stand on the AI shelf.
