AI Recommendation Coverage Leaderboard

AI dairy brand leaderboard

  • Organic Valley leads by 29% over Kerrygold, and wins on breadth, not dominance. Top five in three aisles, champion in none.
  • Three private labels sit in the top seven. Kirkland, Good & Gather, and Great Value together nearly match the #1 and #2 national brands combined.
  • Fairlife ranks 14th despite winning 15% of milk’s #1 answers. Owning one aisle’s top slot does not buy overall visibility.
  • Silk is the only plant-based brand in the top 15, though alternatives take 21% of all recommendations. Dairy-free volume is split across Miyoko’s, Oatly, Califia, and Violife.

Which brands hold up across all AI surfaces?

AI dairy brand consistency by assistant

  • Only Organic Valley clears 4% on every assistant. A tight 4.0 to 4.6% band, the one brand on the list with no weak surface.
  • Good & Gather is the most lopsided brand on the shelf. 6.4% on ChatGPT, 1.5% on Perplexity, a 4.3x gap. It is ChatGPT’s most-recommended dairy brand and barely registers elsewhere.
  • Trader Joe’s has the widest relative swing: 0.5% on ChatGPT, 2.5% on Claude, a 5x spread. Nearly invisible on the surface where Good & Gather peaks.
  • Kirkland Signature inverts the private-label pattern. Weakest on ChatGPT at 1.6%, strongest on Gemini at 3.4%, which suggests it is cited from editorial and review content rather than retail product pages.

*Each cell is the brand's share of that assistant's total recommendations. Only the top 15 brands are shown, so a column sums to roughly a third rather than 100%.

Recommendations, redrawn by parent company

AI dairy recommendations by parent company

  • Two European companies top the list. Danone at 870 and Lactalis at 829 outrank every US owner, on the strength of portfolio breadth rather than any single dominant brand.
  • Retailers combine into a top-three position. Walmart and Target’s private labels total 651 recommendations, which would place them second overall if counted as one exposure channel.
  • Co-ops hold three of the top eleven slots. Organic Valley (CROPP) at 544, Cabot (Agri-Mark) at 299 and Tillamook (TCCA) at 272 collectively out-recommend Lactalis.

*Covers the 7,584 of 12,493 recommendations attributable to a parent company, across 31 owners. Brands with no known parent are excluded from this view.

Sources the assistants get their evidence from

AI dairy citation sources by assistant

  • Each assistant sources from a different internet. ChatGPT pulls from retailer product pages (target.com and walmart.com account for 1,847 of its citations), Perplexity from editorial and health publishers (healthline.com, nytimes.com, tastingtable.com), and Claude splits between the two. There is no single content strategy that reaches all three.
  • Gemini cites nothing visible. All 2,917 of its citations route through grounding redirects, so its sourcing cannot be audited or influenced through the usual channels. That is 24% of all citations going into a black box.
  • Retail PDPs are the single largest source category. Target, Walmart, Amazon, Kroger, Whole Foods and Instacart total 3,239 citations, which makes retailer content a bigger driver of AI recommendations than every editorial publisher combined.
  • Owned content barely registers. organicvalley.coop is the only brand-owned domain in the top 14, with 95 citations, against 127 for reddit.com. Assistants are citing what other people say about brands, not what brands say about themselves.

*Counts are citations rather than product recommendations. All interactive charts are best viewed on desktop or tablet.

What this means for your brand

This report is built from 400 real shopping prompts run across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Every brand each assistant recommended was captured using DataWeave’s platform, along with the position it held in the answer and the sources cited. Recommendations are rank-weighted so first place counts for more than eighth, and brands are normalized and mapped to parent companies where ownership is known.

Run against your own portfolio, the same method answers three questions most brands cannot currently answer: where you rank in AI answers and against whom, which assistants you are losing on, and whether the fix sits in your retailer product pages or in third-party editorial.

This report analyzes the Dairy category. DataWeave measures the same thing across any category and market, continuously rather than as a snapshot. Talk to us to find out where your brands stand on the AI shelf.
