AI Recommendation Coverage Leaderboard

AI spirits brand leaderboard

  • A private label leads the category. Kirkland Signature takes 494 recommendations and 2.7% of the shelf, ahead of Wild Turkey at 432.
  • No brand clears 3%. With 2,223 distinct brands recommended, this is one of the most fragmented shelves across our AI visibility dashboards: the top ten hold 19% between them.
  • American whiskey crowds out everything else. Eight of the top nine are whiskey or bourbon, though they are two of the six categories on this page.
  • Espolòn has the best strike rate in the top twelve. 90 first-place answers from 236 mentions, a 38% conversion that no whiskey matches.

Which brands hold up across all AI surfaces?

AI spirits brand consistency by assistant

  • Espolòn is the steadiest brand on the shelf. 1.2%, 1.5%, 1.1% and 1.3% across the four assistants.
  • Buffalo Trace is the most surface-dependent. 2.8% on Claude against 1.1% on ChatGPT, and only 3 of its 127 first-place answers come from ChatGPT.
  • Wild Turkey fades on Perplexity. 2.7% on ChatGPT and Claude against 1.6% on Perplexity, where just 7 of its 132 #1 answers land.
  • Kirkland Signature is strongest where shoppers ask for value. 3.1% on Claude and 3.0% on Perplexity against 2.1% on ChatGPT.

*Each cell is the brand's share of that assistant's total recommendations. Only the top 15 brands are shown, so a column sums to roughly a third rather than 100%.

Recommendations, redrawn by parent company

AI spirits recommendations by parent company

  • Heaven Hill leads the owners table. 1,957 recommendations, ahead of Suntory Global Spirits at 1,405 and Diageo at 1,052.
  • One wine group reaches the top four. Treasury Wine Estates at 1,076 is the only wine owner among the spirits conglomerates.
  • Campari rides two brands. Its 929 recommendations come almost entirely from Wild Turkey and Espolòn, the #2 brand and the best converter on the page.

*Covers the 15,109 of 18,206 recommendations attributable to a parent company. Brands with no known parent are excluded from this view.

Sources the assistants get their evidence from

AI spirits citation sources by assistant

  • Enthusiast media counts here. tastingtable.com (238), vinepair.com (183), wine-searcher.com (166), thewhiskeywash.com (142) and thewhiskeyshelf.com (120) together outweigh target.com and walmart.com.
  • One retailer is the evidence base. totalwine.com accounts for 4,485 citations, 2,880 of them from ChatGPT — more than every other retailer and publisher on the list combined.
  • Gemini cites nothing you can act on. 4,231 of its citations route through grounding redirects, so its sourcing cannot be audited or influenced through the usual channels.
  • Perplexity is the Reddit surface. 105 of the 115 reddit.com citations come from Perplexity, alongside wine-searcher and the whiskey blogs.

*Counts are citations rather than product recommendations. All interactive charts are best viewed on desktop or tablet.

What this means for your brand

This report is built from 600 real shopping prompts run across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Every brand each assistant recommended was captured using DataWeave’s platform, along with the position it held in the answer and the sources cited. Recommendations are rank-weighted so first place counts for more than eighth, and brands are normalized and mapped to parent companies where ownership is known.

Run against your own portfolio, the same method answers three questions most brands cannot currently answer: where you rank in AI answers and against whom, which assistants you are losing on, and whether the fix sits in your retailer product pages or in third-party editorial.

This report analyzes the Spirits and Wine category. DataWeave measures the same thing across any category and market, continuously rather than as a snapshot. Talk to us to find out where your brands stand on the AI shelf.
